I was wondering if S3DX was going to be a rom or a patch for a sonic 3d blast rom. Thanks Jon :)

It should also be kept in mind that Jon is only modifying the source code and not implementing new assets which should also keep file size down.

@Faizan Rasul Really depends on how much Jon changes it. So far it isn't a HUGE overhaul, unlike some of the more venturous romhacks. Also, Jon's very competent at optimization from what I can tell, so it shouldn't exceed 16 MB. Of course, only time will tell the end result.

Oh, I never knew that. I think most ROMs aren't that big but that could be a problem

@Faizan Rasul Also, patches seem to be limited at 16 MB according to Sega Retro, so that limits patching to a certain extent.

I believe they are but most ROM hacks are drastically different whilst Sonic 3D DX is only improving on the base game. Though I have seen some hacks which don't change too much such as Sonic 2 Heroes or Sonic 2 XL so I could be wrong about the piracy thing now that you've mentioned that

From my memory, I think Jon said he would be releasing it as a patch.
@Faizan Rasul The thing is though, most sonic-related romhacks are released as entire roms these days, and not as patches (although I could be wrong on that point, I remember reading it somewhere on Sonic Retro's hacking guide a few days ago).
Edit: Found it! http://info.sonicretro.org/Category:Hacks "Hacks in the Sonic community are now usually distributed as full ROMs. In the past, IPSpatches were used, since these are usually much smaller than a full ROM and were therefore easier to distribute in a time when dial-up was widely used."

I'm guessing it'll be released as a patch as downloading a separate ROM could be classed as piracy I think
The game isn't too expensive tho, £4/$5 on steam and is usually 50% off on sales
